Searching For Sugarman

Saw the documentary “Searching For Sugerman” the other night. Oh wow. If you haven’t seen it, and I’m guessing most people have not yet seen it, it is well worth the $’s to go find it at your local artsy/indie film theater. Or buy it when it becomes available. This is an amazing story.

Rodriguez recorded two albums in Detroit in the early 70’s and then vanished from sight. Despite critical acclaim from those who heard the recordings, he was dropped by his label. However, a copy of one of his albums made its way to South Africa and over time became one of the biggest sellers in that country. Unheard of outside of South Africa, he was bigger than Elvis Presley there. The movie is the story of two men searching for what became of the elusive musician. I won’t give anything away — go see the movie! Don’t read any more about it, just go see it.

Then buy the soundtrack. The songs, all written by Rodriguez, are amazing. What a beautiful songwriter.

“…I wonder about the love you can’t find
And I wonder about the loneliness that’s mine
I wonder how much going have you got
And I wonder about your friends that are not
I wonder I wonder wonder I do…” – Rodriguez
